Great attention to detail, very well adapted from the first Monster Manual

Ordered and arrived quickly with some anticipation as I have been playing D&D and painting miniatures for over 40 years. These figures are excellent. They are very true to the original illustrations which is much appreciated from the nostalgia viewpoint. The cost of these is about $12 per figure - approximately 2-3 times what I would expect for unpainted figures and in line with other painted sets from Whiz Kids. They are not cheap but not exorbitant by any means. The real winner is the quality of the figures themselves and the painting. They are very well made and flawless with amazing detail and the colors are perfect. I would recommend it to anyone interested in seeing what the game started like or who has been playing long enough to remember AD&D in its infancy.A shout out to Goblin King Games who supplied my figures - thank you for providing this so quickly.

Gorgeous, Nostalgic Minis

Let's be honest here: this set is all about the Beholder. That said, I would say that IF you are willing to pay the somewhat steep price of about $10 for each miniature, then this could be a very good purchase for your collection. Also as regards price, it's worth remembering that even unpainted minis these days (especially of the larger variety as found here) tend to be pushing the $10 mark anyway (and that unpainted!), so maybe the price really isn't that bad at all.Quick reviews of each:Basilisk: is a nice sculpt, though due to the colors of the beast it does rather turn into a brown blob on the table. This isn't the set's fault, though, as it is how they are described in the 1e Monster Manual.Coatl: this fellow is pretty. A very striking miniature in every way. Love the colors!Cockatrice: by necessity a small mini, it is well done. Again, the colors pop nicely.Ankheg: this really is a beautiful sculpt, which is only highlighted by the excellent paintjob. This might be the best Ankheg I've ever seen. I love how the "flight stand" holds it in a very dynamic, menacing pose.Bulette: I love the sculpt here, though perhaps it is a little undersized. It still has a nice presence on the table, however.Carrion Crawler: this figure is just great. The colors, the positioning of its legs and tentacles, its size, are all just about perfect.Chimera: this is one of the best interpretations of this ancient horror I have ever seen. Everything about it, the vast wings, the three hideous heads, its aggressive posture, all contribute to making this an absolutely cracking figure. Though the paintjob can sometimes be a little muddy around the heads, this is still a great figure.Beholder: with all that said above, this set is about this guy, and happy to say they have absolutely knocked this figure out of the park. Now this is how a Beholder should look! One way that I think modern artists have gone astray with portraying this monstrosity is by thinking exaggerated frowning, scowling and a generally misshapen "face" somehow makes things more menacing. I would beg to differ. It's the very fact that this thing is madly grinning and clearly friggin' bonkers that makes it a thing out of nightmare. Much, much more effective, in my opinion. It's true that this figure is oversized: the MM describes them as about 6' across spheres, and this is way beyond that; but so gorgeous is this mini that that is a minor quibble. And what a display piece it makes! So there you have it. If you're okay with the price tag and have a liking for how these creatures were originally portrayed, back in the early days of D&D, then you will love this set, and probably will think it worth every penny.

Masterpieces! Original Dungeons and Dragons Monsters!

This is so incredible! We are so lucky Wizkids is recasting exact duplicate monsters from the original first ever Monster Manual. Published in 1977, the first Monster Manual put together in one volume many of the monsters included in previous Dungeons and Dragons previous works. The creators let their imaginations run wild and create the monsters we so love today. These monsters in this package of A-C duplicate the original drawings in the original monster manual. I still love the original artwork of these monsters by Sutherland, Trampier, Wham, and Wells. Now I get to hold them in my hands and use in my campaign. The figures are built solid. The paint job is very well done. These monsters are a great addition to any collection. I have always loved the original basilisk and now I have it. The beholder is awesome and so is the original chimera. I also wanted the original bulette and carrion crawler. Wow, these monsters help make Dungeons and Dragons the great game that it is. I love how the packaging is based on the original monster manual. It even has the worn look with stains on the side pages. I can’t wait to see the next released volumes of this series. An original black dragon (its head horns faceing straight at an angle) would be a dream come true.

A sweet, nostalgic slap to the face!

The figure detail is very satisfying as they are designed after the original and classic Monster Manual artwork by legends David C. Sutherland III, D. A. Trampier, Tom Wham and Jean Wells. The high price is the only reason I dinked it a star. Despite that, it's going to be VERY collectible so I wouldn't wait to grab one as D-F has already been announced. Can't wait for the next set!

Nice minis, quite expensive

I love the classic nastalgia, but quite pricey for tiny pieces of plastic. I bought them though!

Good set of useful monsters based on 1e MM

I liked the product - the Bullete was a tad smaller than expected and the Beholder was a bit bigger than expected. All the stands are stable and my fave is the carrion crawler. Definitely nostalgic - can’t wait for the next set with the Displacer Beast!

Packaging was damaged. But minitures were excellent.

The products in the box were in good condition but the inside packaging was badly crushed. The outside of the box was in fine condition so it looks like it was packaged this way. The minitures do meet and exceed my expectations though.
