Yes they are very easy to push...I was concerned about the same thing when I ordered the cover

Q: How big is the lip on the front of the case? Will it protect the screen face down?

It's not large but it does seem to protect when face down

Q: is the back smooth? Would it work with a poppet?

yes, the back is smooth. What is a poppet? To my knowledge, it only works for a Samsung 7 edge

Q: Can this case work with a tempered glass on the phone?

Yes. I have a case friendly tempered glass screen protector and it works beautifully
