No pool cleaner is perfect but...

The media could not be loaded. After reading literally hundreds of reviews, I purchased a cordless pool cleaner - it got 35 five star reviews on Amazon and none less than that! I was impressed. I turned off the pump so it wouldn't get stuck on the (raised) drain. It got stuck. It got stuck on the stairs as well. In both cases, it got free after some effort. The problem with these cordless cleaners is that they are power limited because of the battery and freeing itself gobbles up energy. The cleaner also struggled to get up the walls. Plan B was to purchase the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus with WiFi, based on the reviews. In choosing a cleaner I considered the size and shape of my pool because it became clear to me from the reviews that one size doesn't fit all, i.e., a great cleaner for one pool might be terrible for another. I have a lap pool that measures 45 x 7.5 feet, is about four feet deep throughout, and has stairs on one end. I have used the Nautilus CC Plus three times. My pool doesn't get a lot of leaves or debris so I don't need a large basket. The provided baskets are more than ample. My biggest problem is the junk that collects at the waterline so I had hopes that this robot would be helpful. The Frequently Asked Questions, included in the documentations, answered the question, "Does my Dolphin clean the waterline? Answer: The cleaner is designed to climb the walls, but does not reach the waterline". See attached video. This does exactly what I need it to do. Obviously, they need to hire a better marketing person. This robot does not get stuck over the raised drain with the pump running and drawing water from the pool. It climbs the steps (seems to love them) but will occasionally get stuck on a step or in a corner, but it releases itself, and because this is tethered you don't have to worry about draining a battery. It also has considerable power and thrust for climbing the walls and stairs due to it drawing current from the power supply. My only concern is the wear and tear on the paddles/fins, whatever, when it gets stuck as sometimes they keep spinning against my PebbleSheen surface before releasing. Time will tell. I have not been able to pair it with either my iPhone or iPad but I have contacted the company in hopes that they can solve the problem. If not, this is not a game changer for me. Finally, just put it in the water and walk away. I found myself getting stressed and yelling at it, "Why are you attacking the stairs? You haven't touched the other end of the pool? Why do you keep going over the same area?" I thought that this was supposed to be smart and map out the pool but it didn't appear to be doing anything intelligent. I finally went away and when I came back it had covered the whole pool and picked up everything. The robot does not have a memory so every cleaning is a new experience, like a goldfish doing a swim around the fishbowl and forgetting the last pass. Cleaning the filters is a breeze. See the photo of the debris that it picked up on its first use. You can spend a lot more for a pool robot but at this price I highly recommend this cleaner. Update: I have now had this robot for a while and am still very happy with it. The customer service has been excellent. After a few emails back and forth about the WiFi not working they decided to send a new power supply. That fixed the problem. With the Dolphin app on your phone you can turn the robot on and off and schedule it to clean every day or two other options. Unfortunately, you cannot control the robot. This would be useful as it did get stuck a couple of times, and rather than wait for it to free itself (it was taking a long time on the raised drain or step) I decided to free it manually. Perhaps in the future they might add more capability to the app so you could get the robot free without having to intervene manually. I would love to be able to tell it to reverse when it headed to my steps. In conclusion, I stand by my recommendation about the efficacy of the robot and now can add that they have great customer service. Update 7/24/24. The customer service person suggested that I moved the floats closer to the robot, which might alleviate the robot getting stuck on the stairs. I moved the closest one and this seems to have helped. I just purchased pleated filters, which are for finer debris and not included when you buy the robot. I was skeptical but I thought that I would try them. I first cleaned the pool with the filters that are supplied. Immediately afterwards I put the pleated filters in for another cleaning cycle. They picked up really fine material that the standard filter missed. When I rinsed the pleated filter it looked like mud was coming out of them. So these really work. I would not recommend using them without using the coarser filters first because some large particles get stuck in the pleats and not all of them will rinse out easily with a hose so you have to manually separate the pleat to get them out. That being said, there were only a few of these particles so it was no big deal. The robot continues to work very well. I always remove it from the pool when done as I've read that the robot and cable will deteriorate faster if you leave it in the water, however that's for a very long period of time so it's up to you if you want to leave it in the pool and have it come on a particular schedule. Update: June 5, 2025. There was a lot of debris in the pool when it was opened this season. The CC Plus did a great job but keep in mind that if there is a lot of debris you need to empty it more often, i.e., don't let it run the full two hours. After several cleaning cycles I was able to run it the full time. One thing that is aggravating is recoiling the hose. It has a mind of its own. If you start to coil it clockwise it's OK for one or two coils but then it decides it doesn't want to go in that direction anymore. Grrrrr. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

The thing I hated the most was the chore of pulling out the ...

We bought a house with a 16' x 36' pool in 2013. This was a new experience for us, and we tried to become pool people... water analysis, filter operation, chemical addition, etc. The thing I hated the most was the chore of pulling out the big coil of hose and setting up the vacuum head on the 16' pole and then spending an hour plus TRYING to vacuum the pool. The 8' deep end was the worst.... All of this to no avail, as every season we ended up with yellow algae problems, frustrated with our efforts, and put off by the appearance of our water. I was beginning to try to calculate how many dump truck loads of dirt it would take to fill the pool in!! I began to get interested in a pool cleaning robot every time we went in to buy even more chemicals to fix our current pool problem, and finally I decided to take the plunge and buy a robot. This was to be my last effort to make our pool work. We ordered the Nautilus Plus by Dolphin/Maytronics, in March and when it arrived I was not sure this was the way to go. The Dolphin set in our house for a few more weeks until we opened our pool (after all the "helicopter" things were through falling from the Maple trees...) Finally, the day of our pool opening arrived... and we gently placed our Dolphin in the pool, and pushed the start button on the control box....At this point we should cue the music and have a bright spot-light shine on the Dolphin!!! This little monster took off with a vengeance! I was immediately impressed with the amount of water it was moving, and the pristine clear trail it left as it made it's way across the bottom of our pool to the deep end! Maybe 2 to 2 and a half hours later we took it out of our now clean pool, somewhat stunned by it's initial performance! Every one in my family was in awe of it's performance, and we realized that we had, perhaps, turned a corner in our battle to have a clean and inviting pool!Three months in, June 2016, and the Dolphin continues to do an excellent job, and our pool water looks like liquid glass! The Dolphin has become an important part of our pool maintenance regimen, and we use it normally about twice a week to clean the pool. I stress that this is a part of our overall effort to keep out pool in the best shape possible. We still do water analysis and add chemicals... but no where near the same amount as before our Dolphin! We back wash our filter once a week now, so we are saving lots of water, AND most important to me, I no longer have to break my back and take my time to manually vacuum the pool, just let the Dolphin do that thing it does sooooo very well!!!Let me address some of the negative things I have read in the reviews of this pool cleaner...Warranty problems: We have had NO problems with our Dolphin. Right out of the box it has worked like a champion, so I have no comments on the help, support and warranty problems others have posted.Instructions: Yes, the 'bot comes with very little in the way of operation instructions. There is really only one sheet of instructions with drawings on it, that tell how to use the Dolphin... but, if you have even a basic understanding of mechanical things, you should have no problems in making the Dolphin work. Every thing snaps together with ease. Pay attention to how it comes apart and then reverse the process after you clean it... nooooo problems! I guess that Maytronics could do a much better job with the instructions- better drawings and expanded written directions, but I can say I honestly have not had any problems understanding how this critter works. It is very straight forward in construction and operation.Filters: Our Dolphin came with 2 sets of filter cartridges. They are made out of some very sturdy plastic type material and require only a good rinse with the hose to clean. We used the "coarse" set of filters the first time we cleaned the pool, to help get out a few leaves, but from then on, we used the "fine" filter cartridges with great success. We ALWAYS take the time to disassemble the filter cartridges after each use and clean them. We then hose out the inside of the Dolphin to complete the process. Like all things electro-mechanical, normal maintenance and cleaning determine the life of the machine. The filter cartridges are held on the filter frames with 2 rotating snap clips. I think that these could be problematic in the future, but look like they would be easily replaced with a screwdriver if replacement is ever required.Steps and Walls: Yep, try as hard as it might, the little Dolphin is just too big to clean our steps. We just use a brush on an 8' pole to sweep any debris on the steps into the bottom of the pool prior to starting the Dolphin... problem solved. I can gladly spend the minute to sweep the steps vs. the hours plus of time to manually vacuum the pool any day! Our Dolphin climbs right up the walls and runs partially out of the water to clean the pool walls.... it's like it's maaaagic! LOL!Carrier: Our Dolphin Nautilus Plus did not come with a carrier. It does have a very sturdy built in handle that makes carrying it, and getting it out of the pool pretty easy. If you have health problems or back problems, etc. this could be a concern, but we have had no problems here. Also, I have never seen any debris fall out of the unit as I remove it from the pool. That's about all I can think of for right now. Maybe at the end of this pool season, I will follow up with my first season Dolphin results.... stay tuned!I hope this is of help to all thinking about buying a Dolphin. I think this is one of the best purchases I have made in years!!!! We now no longer say we are going to clean the pool with the Dolphin... we now say that we are "RELEASING THE KRACKEN!!!!" LOL! Thank you Maytronics, for allowing me to now enjoy my pool, not just spend hours and $$$ trying to keep it clean!
