Yes the batteries are inside. Check if there is a protecting piece of plastic in the batteries section that you need to pull.

Q: I ordered this book for my niece and when I touch the left pages the words does not get selected. Is this normal or I have been sent a defective piece

I got this for my son and he absolutely loved the book because of so maby words and pictures but it never worked. The left side never worked and even the right side was absolutely hard to get to work properly even for an adult let alone a child. My biggest mistake was not exchanging it, I thought maybe I could change the battery etc. and that took me some time. I absolutely hate that this book never worked for us and was not cheap.

Accent is difficult for indian babies. Book is good but too early for my 2 year old. fisher price ABC would be better option than this for small kid.
