Comfortable whittling knife, superb value.
I'll back up the other reviewers, it is a great traditional slipjoint folder, with a thick clip point blade for general utility or strong cuts, and two smaller thinner blades, one in a bit of a clip, the other a shallow spear point. It carves basswood quite well, still factory shaving sharp after a good bit of abusive cutting. The other thing about this little knife, is that it holds very comfortably. I've found I like it much more than my slab-sided congress knives, this little Rough Rider has smooth curved bolsters that offer uniform surface, and my fingers don't get sore holding it for a good long spell.Fit and finish are also great, I mean it isn't a Case or Canal Street, you're not going to have seamless bolster/liner brazing, but it is honestly built and honestly made, the edge grinds are straight the polish is very bright. I honestly believe the "440A" steel is for all practical purposes equivalent in toughness and ease of sharpening to the old mid carbon steels that were used in these type knives 100+ years ago- just that now you get some chrome added, so it doesn't rust instantly if you neglect it.Rough Rider is definitely the best of the Chinese made traditional pocket knives, and this knife is a good example of their quality. (Well Marbles is from the same Chinese shop now too) Anyway, great value. At the price point, you can try this knife or any of the other patterns to see what works for you, without spending too much. Makes a good first knife. The Cases, Bears, Queens and Canals can stay safe in the collection. This one is getting used!

Pleasant Surprise
I wasn't expecting much from this knife. Its made in China and it is 15-ish dollars. Wow was I surprised! I would say that this blade runs toe to toe in regards to quality with Case Knives (at least the newer iterations). No the back springs are not dead perfect like a GEC, but honestly this doesn't subtract from it's usefulness. The blades are sharp out of that box and the opening and closing pull is great. The snap is really nice too (or if you wanna call it the walk and talk like everyone else). The handle scales are well done. The jigging is very nice. If this said "made in USA" it would be a 70 dollar knife easily. IF you can get over it being made in China, it is a great addition to the traditional knife collection. I plan to buy a few more Rough Rider knives in the future.

Awesome knife at an awesome price
This is a nice knife and it looks great, especially at this price point. I plan to use it for some light whittling and I'm sure the three blades will do the trick. My favorite part is the beautiful red scale used for the handle. I'm not sure if it's bone, I doubt it considering the price (and how fragile it is), but it's still nice regardless. The only thing I don't really like about it is how hard it can be to pull the blades to open them - it's what some would call a nail breaker, especially the small clip blade. Also, be careful with this knife, especially if you're standing on a hard surface. Not long after I took it out of the box, I dropped it on my hardwood floor and chipped a part of the red scale on the handle. It's not a big issue and it's a small chip, but I can only imagine how bad it could be if it were dropped higher and on a harder surface like concrete.

Excellent Small Knife for the Money
I purchased this knife after seeing it mentioned in a number of reviews of similar products and have been very happy with it. I use it for debarking branches prior to kiln drying, and for shaping & carving them after kiln drying; after a couple of months of fairly regular use it's still sharp enough to do the job (and require a bit of care to avoid carving a finger by mistake). There's a definite difference between each of the 3 blades, making each suitable to specific uses (e.g., slicing/cutting off bark vs. whittling shapes vs. carving & shaving fine surface details & imperfections) -- this suits my needs to a T.

The design is nice ans sturdy
The design is nice ans sturdy, but mine had a manufacturing defect. The medium-length blade was too close to the large one when it closes, so opening either one caused two arcing scratches to form in the medium blade, as well as a nick in the edge. Sent it back to amazon for a refund.

Rough Rider Knives 282 Whittler Pocket Knife with Red Jigged Bone Handles
A good investment. I bought this knife for wood carving and found it fits my particular hand well. I've already recommended this knife to others who I knew were looking for a good carving knife. Like any pocket knife, you should be prepared to sharpen it. It may say razor sharp on the blade but it wasn't until I sharpened it that it became so. It is holding the edge very well. I've carved quite a bit with it so far. I really enjoy the feel of this knife.

The BEST Whittling knife out there for the price!
What a GREAT Whittling knife! I heard great things about this knife, but wanted to see for myself if it was as good a whittling knife that people were saying it was. Well, it is! I've got Buck, Case, Schrade (old vintage 34OT and modern Chinese versions) and this Rough Rider is better than all of them! The closest competitor in terms of cutting and controlling your cuts, would be the Buck 301, 303. Next closest, and it is very close would be the Case Medium Stockman CV. Both Buck and Case are close in their ability to cut and in controlling their cuts, but this Rough Rider is better yet! I love the blade geometry, it's perfect for whittling. Blades come VERY sharp and the fit and finish rivals the best 3-blade knives out there. You can't buy a better whittling knife for even twice the price. If you like to whittle, your next knife should be a Rough Rider 282.

Broke after using a couple times on soft wood
I was carving a chess horse yesterday with one of the smaller blades for part of the time and it broke on me. Pretty disappointed. I was using soft wood too so i was very surprised. Thought this was hardened metal. The knife initially was pretty cool since it's so cheap and looks cool. I will likely look for something a bit more durable than this here.
