Magnifies great and the light is great bonus
It is great at magnifying the smallest details. I have used to read small print on boxes, and my wife likes to look at coins for imperfections, and it helps for both. The illumination helps the coin probably better than boxes but on some things i own they like to used black raised plastic (think DC adapters and such) and it's hard without the light to read them wihen its' black raised characters on a black background so the light has assisted on those rare occasions.

A nice magnifier, but nowhere near 30×
I got this to read fine print, which I don’t see as well as I once did. Overall, a decent magnifier that’s up to this task.Pros• Clear image• Uniform image quality across most of the field of viewCons• A bit on the heavy side, but that’s what obtains with a glass lens• Battery cover can be a bit difficult to open• The light could be a bit brighter—but this isn’t a serious shortcoming• Magnification is much closer to 3× than to the stated 30×I have difficulty believing that the 30× magnification is a mistake rather than intentionally misleading advertising. For several reasons, it’s simply impossible to have a true 30× magnifier with an 80 mm lens. A rigorous determination of the actual magnification isn’t difficult, but a very simple test suffices to show that this magnifier isn’t anywhere close to 30×: if 12 point type were viewed with a true 30× magnifier, it would appear to be 5″ high, which clearly isn’t the case here. And frankly, who would want it to be?For most people for most of the uses mentioned here, there is little use for more than 3–4× magnification. Higher-powered magnifiers—usually called loupes—have their uses, but the greater magnification comes at a cost. As magnification increases, the field of view and working distance decrease. And the depth of field decreases, making it imperative to keep the distance very constant. And a good loupe is considerably more expensive. If you want to examine gems or the stylus on a phono cartridge (assuming you’ve even heard of the latter), this isn’t the right tool. But for us older folks who insist on reading the fine print, this magnifier works just fine—and I would recommend it.

When You Need to Sweat the Small Stuff
This was a little heavier than I expected but works great and the light is a great addition.

Excellent for head lice remova!
Everyone thinks it can't happen to them, but inevitably, one of your children will come home with head lice. We've had a it twice in our home, mostly recently a bad case where our child had adult lice before we caught it. (She complained of itching, but I only found dandruff during my first checks.) When we finally spotted the little buggers, I knew right away I would want to use a metal fine-tooth comb and a magnifying glass to make sure we had removed all the lice and nits before stopping daily treatment.I came across this magnifying glass and instantly ordered it. It seemed excessively large when I opened the package, but it turned out to be our magic weapon. This thing can magnify! Since then, I've used it for many other uses -- reading fine print, decoding numbers on gift cards, locating missing earring backs, etc. But it really is amazing for tackling head lice.Speaking of lice, here is our foolproof method for tackling them:1) Put on a movie and place your child in a comfortable chair in front of your comfortable spot on the couch. This is going to take a while!2) Coat hair in massive amount of white conditioner, preferably gently scented or non-scented as minty conditioners can cause irritation.3) Section hair into 4-6 sections and secure with clips. You will work with one section at a time, starting with the bottom and side sections. Lice like to congregate around the edges of the scalp, so you will most likely find them there -- always in the first inch or two of hair. Do not worry much about the ends.4) Add additional coating of conditioner, then pull through the length of small sections of hair. Have a stack of paper towels and a trash bag nearby so you can wipe the accumulated conditioner off the comb and onto the paper towel. Examine for any residue. Use the magnifying glass to confirm if it's a louse, a nit, or just dandruff or debris. Then discard the paper towel into the trash bag and start again.5) Repeat this process all over head, being sure to go through each section several times.6) Once you have thoroughly combed each section, have child flip over their head to comb from the scalp downward. (Like blow drying your hair upside down.) This is uncomfortable, but you will catch additional lice and nits this way.7) When you have completed the lice removal, do not rinse out hair. Add a little more conditioner and put child's hair into a bun or braids. Cover with a hair cap or protect pillow with a towel and have them sleep in the conditioner. In the morning, rinse out all the conditioner, blow dry and straight iron small sections. This will get the bulk of lice.8) Repeat this process once a day for three days, minus sleeping in the conditioner. Just rinse out when the lice check is done, blow dry and flat iron.9) When you have not seen any lice in two hair checks, you may consider yourself lice-free. But continue to check hair once a week for several weeks to make sure you haven't missed a single one.GOOD LUCK!

Batteries don’t last long which is unfortunate because the light is nice.

I just ordered a second one.
It worked great, even before I put the batteries in. It is heavy, but that doesn't concern me. With it, before the batteries went in, I could read the tracking numbers on the UPS receipts for a couple of returns. Perfect! In a day or two, I will have one at each end of the house.
