OnkyoTX-8470 2 Channel Stereo Receiver with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Phono, Hi-Res Audio and Roon Ready

I own a large vinyl collection and was searching for a receiver with built-in phono presmp as a backup to my nearly 30 year old receiver. I didn't want multi-channel overkill, just an adequate 2 channel unit. This Onkyo fit the bill nicely. I would definitely recommend this, especially at the price point.

Too good to be true.Not just for vinyls, sounds even great with CDs.Always been a fan of Onkyo.I also bought a Denon integrated amp a month ago, however it pales when compared to Onkyo. With volume set to 80, the Onkyo amp still delivers clear, crisp and distinct sound, with no distortion at all.Grabbed one when 200 USD was slashed from its original price, last December 2024

Bought this to replace an ancient Kenwood amp that I ran for 22 years.Out of the box the TX-8470 has a bright, almost harsh sound. Highs are crisp and detailed. Things become muddled at lower volumes, though, so you’ll want to crank it loud. And that bright sound, at sustained high volumes, leads to ear fatigue. This is where the weakness of the tone controls makes itself known. Treble doesn’t scale proportionally, forcing continual adjustment. The Bass knob appears to be a placebo; I tested it with everything from Led Zeppelin to Gang Starr and found almost no effect.The solution is to exit the default “stereo” mode in favor of “direct” or “pure sound,” both of which bypass the tone control circuits. This gets rid of the harshness in favor of a nice warm sound that facilitates sustained listening at moderate volumes. Then when you do need the power, this thing’s ready.Onkyo doesn’t include a full manual, instead nudging you to download the “Onkyo Controller” app. Do not do this. Download the full manual, connect to WiFi manually, and go through all your firmware updates before you try to deal with getting the app to work.

First off, the customer experience was top-notch. Received the receiver quickly, tested it right away, for about 4 hours, and carefully repackaged it and sent it back. Amazon and the seller were perfect with the return and swift credit. I had such high hopes for this receiver; it was on my radar for about 5 months. When it went on sale, I immediately bought it. It was to replace my work-horse Onkyo TX8050 (2013) that powers my Klipsch RF7-II tower speakers. The old unit sounds great, but the volume attenuation knob has begun to get flaky when adjusting. I thought I'd replace it with a newer, more powerful version that still has all the inputs that I use and love (especially the front-USB port, no one ever mentions that one, but it's fantastic on the 8050). The new TX-8470 just seemed underpowered. You have to crank the volume up to +50db just to hear it, and not just on CDs as one reviewer mentioned - every input source acted the same. And my favorite input, the USB port - it's there, but it's more cumbersome to use. I had to click 3 or 4 times to get my "single file" loaded USB stick to play. They removed the "USB" button on the remote, and let the "NET" button do double duty, hence the added effort needed to use it. And again, it sounded underpowered, without the rich, detailed, punch that I was expecting. I tried every variation available. So disappointing. I guess I just got lucky with the TX8050 years ago.

This stereo receiver was a bit of a challenge to get hooked up to wifi due to a lack of clear instructions, but now that it has been, it's fabulous. Crystal clear sound and plenty of power. The controls (phone app and remote) are very easy to use, but those on the receiver are rather hard to see. Very happy with the whole thing.

I paid a high price for features that did not work. The APP was unusable. The Bluetooth transceiver was unusable. I also wanted to use the banana plugs but they were too small.

I have owned plent of Onkyo products but this stereo reciever is more than I expected. performs great and has made my speakers come to life. My previous Onkyo was just wore out and did not perform like this one. Great purchase for me and now loving music again on the stereo.

I bought this tx-n8470 about 5 years ago for around $450 and it's worth that amount.No way I would pay close to $800 for this.What improvements did they make to double the price? Nothing.I wouldn't buy it now, don't get took
