Yes, you may need to sand or trim it to get it to fit your drawer. I believe I had to trim mine a little to get the proper clearance in my drawer.

Buy a router table. Buy the two router bits to make Male and Female parts. Buy wood. Measure twice, cut once.

Q: What other hardware is required to install this slide, assuming there is no existing slide to replace? Will a standard backplate work?

It comes with the screws to mount it with. Half of it goes on the drawer bottom and the other half goes on the inside bottom of the cabinet, dresser, or chest of drawers. It mounts as it appears. The bigger part goes on the underside of the drawer and the smaller part goes inside the cabinet, etc. If the screw holes are not present then you have to drill them according to the cabinet you are mounting to and don't forget to resess the head. The gentlemen that mounted mine for me also used some wood glue on the parts that mounted underneath the drawer and in the cabinet. I think there were directions with the slide.
