A nice romance

Was a nice romance story. I like stories that the two main characters come together and are intent on making their love work. This book is the 3rd in a year that the pages every so often were stuck together at the top on the right hand side. This one had over 25 pages stuck.

Longtime Lindsey Reader was Disappointed

"You are as stuck with me as I am with you, no matter how much we both hate it."FINAL DECISION: Rather bland characters and story make this a book that was okay to read but not one I will rush to pick up again.THE STORY: Brooke Whitworth is ordered by the Prince Regent to be sent to marry Lord Dominic Wolfe, the enemy of her hated brother in order to settle a dispute which has led to three duels between the men. If either family does not participate, their lands and titles will be forfeit. Brooke's brother is happy to send her believing that Lord Wolfe will reject her as a bride. The Wolfe, however, intends on frightening her away. What he doesn't expect is that Brooke is happy to marry a man far away from her hated family and she will do everything to make him accept her.OPINION: I am a big fan of Johanna Lindsey. I've been reading her books for thirty years, but this one was a disappointment. There was nothing bad about the book, it just consisted of such a bland story and bland characters that it is utterly forgettable.I liked Brooke as a character. She refuses to be cowed by her circumstances or her unhappy fiance. She is determined to make things work for her. She is clever and kind. Unfortunately, she was the best part of the book and was not unique enough to support the entire book.Dominic was the biggest disappointment. His character was just bland and unimpressive. There didn't seem to be anything to his character except his vendetta against Brooke's brother. My reaction to him was just a big yawn. The story was resolved in too pat a manner. Too much easy happy endings where things were too broken to be so easily resolved. I just felt a big lack of any intense emotions, even passion in this book. There was one obligatory love scene that wasn't particularly interesting either. The story wasn't horrible, but just so bland that I would just recommend reading one of the amazing Lindsey books instead of this one.WORTH MENTIONING: The funniest part of this book is when Dominic keeps getting his face slapped "propositioning" new mistresses.CONNECTED BOOKS: MAKE ME LOVE YOU is a standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 2.5 stars.

Average Read

Trope: historical romance, arranged marriage/marriage of convenienceSlow burn level: 62% not a smutty bookHero is a viscount forced by the prince to marry heroine as a consequence of participating in duels. If hero doesn't, he forfeits properties.Heroine is the unloved daughter in a family. The prince requires her family marry her off to the hero to bridge peace between the families. Heroine enjoys horses and herbal arts healing. She wants the marriage to work so she doesn't have to return home.HEA (with pregnancy), there was almost too much resolution amongst the families where it felt unrealistic, but it's at least explained.Trigger warnings: mention of suicide

Shallow parody of a historical romance

This is a tough book to review. If you compare this to Johanna Lindsey at her best, I would give this a 2 star at the very most. If you compare to many books I read perhaps this may squeak out a 3 star. This is definitely light-hearted and unrealistic. Everything is just too happy. This book is set at the end of the Regency period and yet none of the characters seem at all constrained by the rigid social rules of that time period. Brooke seems to go wherever she wants without a chaperone. Even if the premise is that her father does not like her because she is a girl I doubt he would let her have free reign like she did because that would reflect poorly on him. I suspect he would actually consider her a valuable pawn instead. The ending almost felt like a parody of a romance novel in that every (and I do mean every) single detail was tied up in a nice happy bow with even a HEA for her dog and horse! Love and happiness and redemption for everyone except the bad guy who is finally disowned and discredited at long last. Don't get me wrong I read romance for the happy but really this went so far over the top as to be ridiculous. Shallow, I guess that is the best way to describe this book. I did not get the happy tingles reading it. I am disappointed. I am particularly disappointed that I spent $13.99 for this. If you are new to Johanna Lindsey look to some of her older work. If you are already a Lindsey fan, just avoid this.

Good Love story

I enjoyed the story and liked the ending even better. I’ve read almost all of her books & was sad to hear she passed away in 2019 from lung cancer. Her last books written don’t have as much sex, but are still well written & keeps you interested. I read some of the bad reviews and I have to disagree with their opinion, but enjoyed the book and finished it in a day. RIP Johanna Lindsey! I will make sure I read all of her books.

JOHANNA STRIKES AGAIN. LOVE IT.

My all time favorite Author strikes again. Ms. Lindsey and Kasey Michaels are the two best authors ever. While this story is less than Ms. Lindsay usual offerings it is still a great story. I loved the Characters, their backstories and their interaction. I was impressed with the Prince Regent aspect of this story and how the author took the reader right up the doorway of completing his edict and then BAM!!!She slammed the door and left both of the main characters now acting in a totally different way and direction. The story is an amazing tale and one that you really must read to see for yourself where this very talented and crafty author takes the reader. I think even if you don't think it's a 5 star read you will non-the-less in enjoy the journey and the story she weaves for her loyal readers.I loved it. I hope you will too.

Okay, but not the best Regency I've read.

Reading this reminded me why I don't read many books by this author. When authors, no matter what their nationality, write books set in Regency England I expect them to do the research to get the titles right and the fashions, hairstyles etc. This book is set in that period; you have the hero, Dominic Wolfe, Viscount Rothdale, whom the author insists on calling "Lord Wolfe". He should actually be called Lord Rothdale, it's the title that is used not the family name.. Brooke Whitworth, the heroine, is an Earl's daughter and therefore has the courtesy title of "Lady". However, she would be Lady Brooke Whitworth, or just Lady Brooke, not Lady Whitworth. Also, no fashionable man in that period would wear long hair tied back, or a wig, that was old fashioned and out of style. The fashion for men was short cropped hair, often in the Brutus style, i.e. dishevelled or 'windswept'.Okay, the story concept was quite good, but it dragged on, with snarling, grumpiness and bickering throughout. Then Brooke solves the mystery right at the end within a few pages. I think that the trouble is that JL takes it from day to day, as most of it takes place within a 3 week period.

Really??

I liked the sound of this book and I have loved other Johanna Lindsey so I figured it was an easy buy.I was wrong. This book was boring and by the 3rd chapter I was beginning to doubt that it was written by Lindsey. In her usual books, the sex scenes were hot and and the male and female leads would always at some point have me laughing. The leads in this book bored me, in fact this whole book bored me.Would not recommend this for Lindsey lovers at all.Sorry.

Entertaining Enough

PLEASE NOTE - I only review books I HAVE read.Great writer, well written story but the book is a tad overlong. It was promising at the beginning but got a little boring towards the end. In fact, I just can't be bothered to give a synopsis. All in all, the book was ok, but I won't be rushing out to buy Miss Lindsay's next one. It's a shame, when such a good writer, with an excellent back catalogue, produces a less than sparkling, formulaic plot.

Nothing special

Very easy to read and predict the outcome. It was a good read in the plane but nothing special. Mrs Lindsay’s earliest work was full of passion and surprised you at every turn of the page. She used to describe fully the characters. You could even envision them in your mind and they could keep you up all night in order to finish the book. Sadly, this was not the case.

Recommend

Brilliant as always, lies lead to more lies, and confusion, people are never what they seam , so it’s true never judge a book by its cover , still nice HEA 💖
