Replacement A/V

Had a 13 year old Onkyo that lost its video board. Wanted another that would have same/better functions but be the same size to fit in the same place of my old unit. This was it - exact same dimensions and after 13 years has same or better functions, which you should expect. Changed out old and set up the new in about 2 hours. Balanced my existing 5.1 surround system - don’t have 7.1 which is supported. Only negative is that when air playing I only get audio and no video, therefore I still use my Apple TV for air playing.

I needed this for my needs

I like the power for my home music & home theater. The quality & sound.

Almost 5 stars

Sounds great , Easy to set up the only thing that held me back from 5 stars was the little teeny tiny twist and clamp speaker wire set up for the majority of your speaker wires, I have ran 12 gauge wire to all my in wall and ceiling speakers and it took me hours to get these to work with my large wires. My other Onkyo Receiver accepts all banana clips and worked well. I did not even notice that this one was different. It is apparently designed for really small speaker wire.

Couldn’t be happier.

The media could not be loaded. Set up was really easy. This is my first ever AV install and I have a 5.2 set up. 5 Klipsch speakers and 1 Klipsch Subwoofer. My dog can attest to the sound quality. The setup was really straight forward and I added the sub a few days after and it wasn’t difficult at all.My Samsung tv is compatible. I’m very very happy with it.

Stay away

Got this receiver for its HDMI 2.1 capabilities. To its credit, it will pass through vrr 4k 120hz, but the handshake issues make it a pain to use. When I first got the receiver the HDMI switching was painfully slow. Going from in game fullscreen to the desktop and back took forever. Going from one HDMI input to another took forever. Onkyo released a firmware update a few months after launch and now the HDMI switching is very fast. I wish that was the only issue. As mentioned before there are serious handshake issues. Booting up a game, I pretty much always have no sound. You will see the display of the receiver blinking the speaker indicators off and on as it tries to find the sound signal. It never does. The only way to get sound is to either change resolution on game and after it switches the sound comes on. I then click cancel when the game asks if I want to keep the new resolution still that I go back to the one that I wanted in the first place. This is extremely annoying too have to do every single time but if that were the only issue I would begrudgingly accept it. It is not. I can also get sounds to work in game if I disconnect three HDMI cable and reconnect or if I switch inputs and back. All annoying solutions. The other issue is that the handshake is so wonky that I can't access the UEFI on my PC. It won't display video inn UEFI. It often won't display the PC loading screens to even enter the UEFI. I have to connect my PC directly to my TV in order to do anything in bios. My previous Denon receiver had none of these issues on the same PC and TV. It was not HDMI though, which is why I upgraded to this, in actuality, downgrade of a receiver. The first firmware did a great job of speeding up the HDMI switching. I'm hoping there will be a firmware update soon to address this handshake nonsense. Regardless, this is a one star or less product and the last onkyo receiver I ever buy.Like the title says, stay away. Far away.

My old Sony STR-HR540 is better sounding

There are many problems with my unit and unfortunately Onkyo was aware of them before I purchased it. I had to call the support staff many times and although they are very nice and helpful, the device is plauged with work arounds and reconnection and reboots. The on-screen display for the menu and settings to the TV mostly doesn't work. They suggest that I convert the HDMI to network cable and back to HDMI at the TV. I assume that the receiver doesn't generate enough current to make the display work properly. The sound quality is good if you don't use the included microphone as all my measurements were completely wrong and it sounded like built-in tv speakers when used. Resetting the collected information with the correct measurements and some tweaking made it sound as good as the older Yamaha it replaced.I have to question the quality and engineering of this product as mine just has too many problems for the money I spent on it. I seriously doubt that I would consider another Onkyo product unless they agreed to replace this with one without so many problems and work-arounds.My Denon and older Yamaha didn't have these problems. I am not happy.Update: There was an update to the firmware which has improved the system's available setting screen which is now working (at least for now) so I am adding one star. I have the units sound better by manually making the adjustments. I would say that I am happier, but honestly this product should have been launched when it was fully tested and ready for consumers.Update 2, one out of ten times that I use it, the sound doesn't come on so I have to turn it off, then back on to get the sound to operate. Seriously the unit I have is not good. I'm thinking about going back to my old Yamaha. I am VERY dissatisfied and I can't afford to replace this for a while. Shame on Onkyo for making this poor quality of Home Theater Receiver.Update 3: This Home Theater Receiver continues to disappoint me. The sound is satisfactory if I manually input the speaker distances but the screen and sound doesn't work for me most of the time. I recently moved an older receiver from Sony into the same place and it sounded just as good as this Onkyo HTR. Since it costs much more, I can't recommend this receiver at all. Onkyo support doesn't seem to want to support this product any longer. This will be my last product from Onkyo since I feel this is simply inferior to Sony and Yamaha products. I am very unhappy!
