This medieval motif originates from the woven textile border of royal vestments tailored for William II in 1181 in Sicily. The griffin was a common medieval motif used in several materials for artistic purposes and the design in this textile, made in Norman Sicily, followed the principles of the arabesque. Such textiles and art were very popular in the cosmopolitan hub of Norman Sicily and Palermo.
