First impressions

I had the device for about 2 weeks now and used it quite a bit. I've given it 4-stars, but 3.5 is more accurate. The device works with some annoyances, but in the end I just couldn't justify it for the price and so returned it. However, it is the only 10-inch reader with a front light and works moderately well.FIRST: The listing says that it accepts SD cards which is NOT correct -- the device takes microSD.Pros:1 - Build quality is excellent. Even the stylus holder is well-made and looks like it will last for a long time.2 - Screen quality is just as good as the Paperwhite as is the front light. I haven't had a chance for a long reading session yet, but after 15-20 minutes in the dark w/light I experienced no eyestrain.3 - Moved to con -- see Con #7 on the default reader below4 - Browsing on the device isn't all that bad -- you won't want to use it for standard browsing, but if you need to look something up quick, it works.5 - In general, the device is fairly responsive for an e-ink device. UPDATE: Not sure about this anymore. There are issues with the screen updating and so on. I discuss some of them below.6 - Stylus works quite well and writing in the note app (or elsewhere) is easy and satisfying. Much better than my experience with a stylus and iPad (and I've tried a number of well-known styli... styluses... ?)7 - UPDATE - I previously listed as a con that the device would always shut off after a few minutes in sleep mode. I've now found the setting to turn this off. You can set it to different times up to 60min. (It would be better to have something like a 1-day setting. Quite often I'll have over an hour in between use and it would be great if it wouldn't shut off, but I could still have a shut down for when I forgot to turn it off over long periods.)Cons:1 - A bit of a learning curve. The manual is hit or miss. There is no explanation of how to highlight or draw in PDFs. Any progress I've made with the device has been by trial and error.2 - The dictionary is both Chinese and English and I can't find a way to change this. Not a huge deal, but I can't read Chinese so it's just lot of extra symbols I don't understand whenever I click for a definition.3 - Grammatical errors pop-up here and there.4 - The 'app ability' is OK so far. The first I downloaded was the Kindle app and that tends to hang-up or crash. I've also installed Foxit PDF reader which also tends to hang up. Tapping (w/ pen) on the screen seems to get things moving most of the time. Box.net app works fine. That's all I've tried so far.5 - There are two buttons on the stylus and I have no idea what they do. The manual is of no help here. UPDATE: If you hold -- or maybe just click -- the side button while in the reading app, it will put you into the draw mode.6 - The library can seem cluttered as there is no listing option for just file/book names -- at most you get 7/8 titles on screen. So if you have a big library, you'd need to know what you want and search for it. That can be a problem when unsure what to read and so need to scroll through.7 - The default reader:The PDF/Book reader that comes with the device is buggy -- page transitions can be quick, but not they are not as clean as the Paperwhite. At times they are fairly slow (2-3 seconds) and it doesn't seem to be due to different files or file types. At other times the screen won't refresh so you just get a bunch of pages stacked on top of one another. Flipping back and forth sometimes works, but most often I have to exit the reader and re-enter. It also lacks an option to return to your last place. For example, if I click a footnote, etc. it will take me to that place, but there is no easy way to return like on the Kindle. To be blunt -- this is just awful and such a simple feature that could have been implemented. Hopefully, I'm missing something here. Lastly, highlighting is an absolute chore and very slow. I switched to FoxitPDF for a while and the highlighting was very easy, but page turn buttons don't work with that program. So I've stuck with the default reader for now, but only use the draw function for highlighting and annotations which works fairly well.Post any questions in the comments and I'll be happy to check it out.

Close to being great, but Onyx needs to do some UI, pen tweaks and fix battery issues. I will watch for the next version!

I wanted to love this product, as I have to read and annotate a great deal of PDFs for work, and traditional screens are less than ideal. The problem is that the Onyx Boox is close to being a great product, but also not functional enough for me to practically use it for reading and annotating. The pen input is actually rather good, with quick response times for e-ink and few glitches, mostly occurring when you are close to the screen edge. On my copy you have to press hard on the screen to register a pen touch and there doesn't appear to be any way to adjust the required pen pressure. Long-term I think this would be a problem, either scratching up the screen, or leading to failure. The built-in application for reading and annotating PDFs is OK, however it has some major flaws. Primarily there is the problem that annotating and navigating are not well integrated, it takes multiple menu presses to switch between navigation and notes, and sometimes button presses are not registered. This is a mistake, and devalues the note-taking capabilities if you are someone who will want to take notes and also surf around a document. Also, if you navigate to a hyperlink (which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), for example from a table of contents, there doesn't appear to be a way to return to the TOC. Pressing the back button moves you back a page, not to your last position. A simple and fixable error, but one that really impacts my ability to use the device.Another issue that I encountered is that the screen almost always starts up in frontlit mode, and switching the front light on and off is not as quick and easy as it should be. Again, I can't just pick up the device and start using it, I first have to go into the menu and disable the frontlight. The resolution leaves a bit to be desired. For diagrams I often found smallish text to be unreadable. This is probably an e-ink problem more than a problem with Onyx's device, but this is still a problem. Finally, and this is why I returned by BOOX, battery life was a real problem. I found that the battery went from full charge to half charge overnight with barely any use of the device. This is not the kind of battery life I expect out of an e-ink device, and I worry about the longterm ability of the device to hold charge.

Good for some, not for me. Decent for PDFs, no highlighting, don't rely on Kindle.

My first impression seemed good. I got it turned on, the screen looked nice, and I started using it, but failed to enjoy using it. For the price, it wasn't a huge let down, but it didn't accomplish the few things I was looking for. If you're looking for a $300 9.7" e-reader that can do PDFs and allow you to take notes, then this is probably a good deal for you, but the main hang-ups for me were:1. You can't actually highlight with the stylus. You can scribble on PDF or Epubs, which is great for taking notes, but sometimes I just want to highlight a specific line and for that, this was fairly useless.2. The Kindle App works sparingly. It seems like the screen cuts off a menu or something because I couldn't even get to table of contents for my books to get to a different chapter. Part of the problem is this is running Android 4.0 so the Kindle App is old, but I think some of the issues also lie with the screen. Changing pages would sometimes end up with very poor looking text and the screen just didn't seem to fit the app well. If you're looking to use Kindle, check the box in the settings to use volume keys to turn pages, that will allow you to turn pages with the hardware buttons.3. The note taking app is bland. Very little features and trying to use an app off Google Play is frustrating. Taking notes on this device with their apps is smooth. Taking notes on this device with any other app has a very noticeable delay. So you're pretty much stuck using their note taking app, which I wouldn't recommend for anything more than lists or quick notes.
