Most straight forward answer to adapting older homes to Smart Thermostats
Thermostat wiring in my home was installed mid '90's. Typical of the times, just 2 wire thermostat cable used- R/W to all 3 heat zones. If possible, it's BEST to try to replace 2-wire with 3-wire R/W/C cable when installing a smart thermostat. I was able to do that for both my 1st floor thermostats, using original 2-wire cable to pull up 3-wire replacement from basement. (This was not possible for my 2nd floor thermostat. See ** )Once you have 3-wire cables, bear in mind other limitations may exist for integrating smart thermostats to older heating equipment. Your boiler/furnace controller needs to have a "C" terminal for the thermostat cables to attach to. And its 24VAC transformer should have adequate capacity to power things other than just its controller relays (40VA preferred over 20VA). These limitations of older heating systems can all be overcome by adding components. I had to do do this.** For 2nd floor, a "Power Connector" (for Nest) solved the problem. I uses 2 the two wires in the irreplaceable cable as R & C. It superimposes signalling to enact the thermostatic activation (R-W relay closure) within the Power Connector itself (attached to boiler controller). All smart thermostat makers now offer a gadget that does this.

Item as described wire gage is correct.
Product is exactly as described. There is no issue with the wire gage. The wire gage is 18 AWG SOLID spot on. Others mention that it is smaller however they are likely getting confused and don't understand that there are STRANDED and SOLID AWG gages. Take a closer look at your wire stripper and directly across from 20 AWG STRANDED one will see 18 AWG SOLID. Hope this clears things up.

Soft insulation
The wire functions as advertised. The colored insulation coating each wire is very soft and thin. it is very easy to peel off and can be penetrated easily. I was careful not to cause it to be penetrated in my thermostat application. On the positive side, you can use a fingernail to strip back what you need to be clean wire.

Fixed
I recently moved and PS&G offered me a free Google Nest thermostat, so I figured why not. While installing it, I realized I had no common wire or G (fan) wire. Rather than getting the nest power adapter, I decided to just get a wire that had both a common wire and an extra wire to use to control the fan. I have only heat (forced air), so I got the 4 wire setup and installed it today. My nest thermostat works perfectly now, and I can control the fan. No issues, seems to be good quality and it was easy to strip and connect to my furnace and thermostat.

Great for wiring garage door sensors and controllers
Give your garage door a professional finished look by installing this wire in the walls during rough-in. This way you won’t have wire stabled everywhere and avoid snagging it when moving things around in your garage. The wire is decently gauged so it won’t snap during stripping or twisting - unlike cheaper alternatives.

MY Review of the Syston 18/2 Thermostat HAVC Heating Control Cable Wire
I used this cable to connect my new Aprilaire 8052 outdoor temperature sensor (3rd pict) to my Aprilaire 600 humidifier (1st pict) in my mechanical room with a (40 foot) run thru the ceiling to the utility room to the back of my house. The 8052 sensor came online immediately, and it resolved my over-humidity problem. This is a great product I would recommend it.
