Q: How is magic jack compared to Ooma ? I want reliable service and good customer support. What do you guys recommend?

I used MagicJack for over ten years, several different models, and it is hands down the lowest cost, somewhat reliable, home phone service that you can get. In 2008, I started using it in college because I wanted to save money on my cell phone bill and I needed to occasionally fax. It worked, it didn't offer any customer service support and it still doesn't, but if you are technically literate you can get by with it. I stopped using it about a year ago when I upgraded my cell phone and starting using a MVNO on the Verizon network. The problem with that is neither my cell phone with its Verizon phone number nor the MagicJack could call each other, the calls were blocked. It probably has to do with fees that MagicJack doesn't pay to connect public phone networks. So, I got Ooma, which did work on all calls and always has worked, so far. Yes, I pay about twice as much now, about $6-7/month, as opposed to $45/year for MJ with the taxes and fees. While MJ sounds OK, Ooma sounds better. I guess my income went up after I graduated college. I remember the days when I used to pay $30-40/month just for local phone service with no features. One thing that MJ does offer is a smaller package, which if anyone were traveling today, would be a good use for it.

Q: can this be connected directly to my router eliminating my computer from being on ?

Yes, in fact that is how it was designed to function. The router plugs into one jack and a phone plugs into the other jack and then the unit is plugged into a power source. It will also work through your computer if you wish and if you get the app, it will work through your cell phone. It literally makes your cell phone operate with two separate numbers.

Q: What's the difference between mj go (2017) and mj home (2019)?
