Q: Will this system work on a wire shielded 18 or 22 wire? If not is it returnable

It will work on the 18 gauge shielded and on the 22g...but on the 22g you would best double up making two wires out of the four. The factory recommends 18/2 solid. You can return it if it does not work on the 18/2 shielded. Ken (Shoppers Save)

It will support the door lock but not a second door station.

Q: I live in a 2 unit building. Can I get this and add on for a separate unit?

I don't quite understand your question. Is this for a single home with 2 floors or is it 2 separate residences? These are hard wired units requiring wiring from the door station to the inside monitor and power supply. if you add a 2nd inside station, you will have to run a wire between the two monitors.
