A Fine Mog Book--Not Racist (Roll Your Eyes at the Previous Review.)
I was quite worried given the only other review on this site, but ordered it anyway--perhaps as much to see this horrible Indian as anything--but also because we are big Mog fans in our family. We have a multiple little ones and read a LOT of children's books for that age. This is a fine alphabet book with delightful language. It is completely in line with the rest of the Mog books. If you like the Mog books and also like reading alphabet books with your learning readers, buy it with no worries. The scary, racist, embarrassing portrayal of a native American is <dum, dum, dum, cue scary music> an Indian on the I page, who is portrayed as <dum, dum, dum> an Indian wearing moccasins and a traditional head-dress. He is not portrayed in any buffoonish way. He is portrayed as a nice fellow "inviting" Mog to eat "ice cream". Get it? The letter I.Later our Indian/Native American reappears to pours some tea from a kettle on the k page for a picnic. I completely fail to see the racism endemic in portraying a friendly Native American who likes ice cream and picnics. I just missed the "ice cream and picnics" stereotype when I was growing up. Granted, I'm an evil white oppressor, so what do I know? It's just an Indian, the common term at the time the books were produced, aka Native American. Now I grant you that the ceremonial head-dress is over-used to indicate the Native American, and was only worn on very special occasions by a very few, still, I think that the hyper-ventilating previous reviewer really, really, really needs to lighten up.

but it's adorable.
As a huge Mog fan myself I was very excited to get this book for my 2 year old for Christmas as a gift "from" our cat. He absolutely loves it and we read it every night. Loves the "Dragons doing Damage in the Dark". I didn't realize it would be an alliterated wild tale, but it's adorable.

A good book for those with children who are learning the ...
A cute Mog book, Judith Kerr starts her story, but uses as many words beginning with (example) A as possible. A good book for those with children who are learning the alphabet. I shall order from these people again.

Great first alphabet book
Great book for introducing little ones to the sounds made by different letters of the alphabet.

Insensitive stereotype of American Indian
Judith Kerr is generally terrific, but in this book she quite unfortunately portrays a Native American in a cartoonish and stereotyped way. Many people will be surprised, but as Native Americans are a living culture, they don't like being pictured as toys, clowns, or something other than dignified human beings. We threw it out, because it was to embarrassing to read to our kids.

Mog makes the alphabet fun
I bought this book for my daughter just as she was beginning to become interested in the alphabet and reading. The story works through the alphabet in order, introducing each letter with a graphical image that is the product of one of Mog's crazy dreams. Whether intentionally or not on the part of the author, this is supposedly just the right way to go about memorizing things, and it seems to work very well with my 4 year old daughter. A single reading was enough for her to memorize and recognize about 1/4 of the alphabet . From another perspective, this is simply an enjoyable book that will more than satisfy your young reader as another chapter detailing Mog's adventures. Whether you are seeking something to help your young reader get to grips with the alphabet and reading, or just looking for a good story with great illustrations, I think this book will not disappoint.
