Works great!
Worked great right out of the box! We had a spot on our ceiling that looked damp and I wanted to see if there was actually water in it, so bought this. Works awesome, eased our minds and now we get to repair an old leak!

Great moisture reader
Product was on sale and I needed to see if there was moisture in my wallProsAccuracy in Penetrative Readings – Pin-type moisture meters provide precise readings for moisture content within the material, making them ideal for professionals in woodworking, construction, and home inspection.AffordabileIdeal for Detecting Deep Moisture – Since the pins penetrate the material, they are more effective at detecting moisture inside a surface rather than just on the exterior.ConsSurface Damage – The biggest downside of pin-style moisture meters is that they leave small holes in the material. This can be problematic for finished wood, drywall, or other delicate surfaces.Limited Coverage Area – Since readings are taken at the exact points where the pins are inserted, multiple tests are required to assess moisture distribution over a large area.Inconsistent Performance on Hard Materials – meter struggles with denser woods or materials that resist penetration, leading to unreliable readings or difficulty inserting the pins.Would not spend more than 20-30 $

Better than Guessing... It's Science!
I'm a potter with a wood fired kiln in Northern Michigan, and I have to know that my wood is dry, dry, dry: 15% (20% at the very most) moisture content. I've had 2 different moisture meters, and like this one best. It's accurate. Easy to read indoors and outdoors. I've dropped it several times; it didn't break or crack or start acting up. The batteries last a long time, are easy to change, and that little door that holds them in hasn't broken.I originally got this to use at the kiln, but now I also use it to check the wood I heat my house with. No more guessing. The most important factor in getting a clean burn and maximum BTU's out of your wood is low moisture content. If that's important to you, get one of these gadgets.Right price, good screen size, simple to use, accurate.

What the Factory Says!
So, a nice device but some caveats. In order to get the 'factory approved' read you MUST push the pins into the wood "all the way" (yes, about a good 1/3 of an inch) or it simply isn't the devices best read. Now for those who cannot get that full insertion General makes the MMD7NP which does mostly the same thing without pins! Less overall effort. Not an issue into, say, drywall but you will find 'hard firewood' (read, long burning) can be difficult to obtain full insertion (and REMEMBER these comments, instructions are direct from a live factory rep)... suggested testing methods of, as an example, firewood is to split it open so you can measure internal and external (and the internal that I measured on a piece of firewood was about 20% while the skin or bark fully inserted was 7.5%... so big difference and maybe enough to cause the wood to start easy and then die out? As most have commented there is NO included manual, factory notes that is on purpose and suggests obtaining it from their website as a PDF. This is a simple device and there is one page of instructions on the site however for inclusiveness sake the 'other languages' make up many more, perhaps why they stopped printing. Fabricated woods or building materials should be easy to test, soft woods firewood would also be agreeable but 'real hardwood' will be more difficult to pin test or 'rip' and test both internal and outer regions for dryness. The device can withstand some real pressure to "insert" but don't twist or bend while inserting, the results are broken pins and no reading.
